Hotels & Travel
It is not by coincidence that the First Coast Kids Triathlon has become one of the most respected kids triathlons in the world over the past 8 years. In fact, it is largely due to the incredible efforts of a team of volunteers. These folks form the Organizing Committee for this wonderful event, and they work tirelessly to ensure everything comes together to create an amazing experience for the participants, sponsors and spectators. Their goal is to make each year a little better than the last.
Please join us in recognizing and thanking these community leaders of the 2017 event:
- Shelda Moll (Kids Triathlon, Inc.)
- Susan Messer (Duval County Public Schools)
- Craig Chaney (YMCA of Florida’s First Coast)
- Almon Gunter (Coach, Author and Motivational Speaker)
- Chris Reese (Kids Triathlon, Inc.)
- Jay Millson (Florida Academy of Family Physicians)
- Alan Verlander (JaxSports Council)
The first triathlon was on September 24, 1974 in San Diego, CA. In 2000, triathlon became an Official Olympic Sport for the first time as part of the Sydney Olympics. Since then, it has been recognized as one of the fastest growing sports in the world. And, kids triathlons have been an important part of this trend.
In 2009, Kids Triathlon (a 501(c)3 entity) helped organize its first triathlon for kids in Jacksonville, FL. Nearly 500 youth (ages 5 to 15) participated, making it the largest first-time kids triathlon ever held. The First Coast Kids Triathlon continued to grow over the next 3 years to more than 1,700 participants in 2011. At this point, the race became the largest kids triathlon in the USA.
This success attracted the attention of USATriathlon (the governing body of the sport in the US under the auspices of the US Olympic Committee); the NFL PLAY60 Initiative; and the YMCA. Together, these organizations pooled resources to expand the event into Nashville, TN in 2011. Over the ensuing years, Kids Triathlon grew into the largest (and best) kids triathlon series in the world with events in 6 cities and more than 8,000 participants in 2014.
What these kids accomplish is nothing short of amazing. If you would like to learn more about how you can help tell their stories, please reach out to us. Media credentials are available for race weekend as well as for what kids are doing to prepare for the big race. Please utilize the information below to reach out to us, and we will do everything possible to help.

Awards & Results
The First Coast Kids Triathlon is all about giving kids the opportunity to accomplish something less than 1% of all kids will ever do. In this spirit, every finisher is recognized with a custom medal and free ice cream. All participants also receive a cool t-shirt along with a Race Goody Bag filled with neat stuff.
At the same time, we make a significant investment in timing each event just like it is a professional race. Every participant wears an RFID timing chip on their ankle during the race, and receives 6 separate times. At the end of the race, each athlete will know their swim; T1 (transition from swim to bike); bike; T2 (transition from bike to run); run; and total times.
With this timing information in hand, we recognize the fastest triathletes at every age level, boys and girls, with trophies. Specifically, the top 3 finishers at each age (6, 7, 8, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15) are recognized in a post-race ceremony. More importantly, every participant is able to compare all 6 of their times with other competitors, and they can set goals to improve over the next 12 months.
In addition to the awards described above, the First Coast Kids Triathlon is 1 of 3 races in the US offering the XClass™. This is a separate race offered to kids who have selected triathlon as their primary sport. Most of these athletes participate on year-around kids triathlon teams; and have completed at least 5 kids triathlons. Past participants in Jacksonville include numerous national champions, and we encourage everyone to watch and learn from these amazing athletes.

Our course is designed to be spectator friendly, and we encourage you to take as many photos as possible. In doing this, we have only two requests.
- Please stay off the race course, and
- Please be respectful of all athletes.
We want you to get great photos, but it is not fair if you end up in the way of another athlete. And, if you would prefer not to have to worry about viewing the entire event through a camera, we will have professional photographers on-site to capture all of the action. Please check back to this page as we get closer to race weekend for all related information and a link to their website.
