New England Kids Triathlon

Unfortunately, our 9th annual New England Kids Triathlon event will have to wait until 2021. Get the latest on our COVID-19 response. Learn more

As you might imagine, this breaks our hearts. At the same time, we completely understand our partners at MIT, the City of Cambridge and the New England Patriots all have higher priorities. They love our event and have been incredible supporters since we held our first kids triathlon in 2011. At the same time, they have to make decisions that are right for their organizations and for the overall health of the community.

We are in 100% agreement with this approach and extend their focus to the safety and well-being of our participants, fans and volunteers. If we work together and stay focused, we will lessen the impact of COVID-19 across New England and be able to return to the lifestyle we love much sooner.

In fact, we have already begun planning for July 2021!

Thanks again for your incredible support of the New England Kids Triathlon. It is with a heavy heart we share this information. At the same time, we know there are many others - starting with our first responders - who are doing so much more to keep us healthy and safe.

Also, we know we are in this together, and we hope you will be able to fill your summer with swimming, biking and running as we all look ahead to a better 2021. Take care and be safe.

The 2020 Organizing Committee

The New England Kids Triathlon will once again be held on the beautiful MIT campus in the heart of Cambridge. The center of all the action will be the Johnson Athletic Center Vassar Avenue.

As with any event in Greater Boston, parking is a central challenge. However, the leadership at MIT has been very accommodating in helping us find convenient parking for the nearly 1,000 cars that will descend on campus Sunday morning.

Race Committee

It is not by coincidence that the New England Kids Triathlon has become one of the most respected kids triathlons in the world over the past 8 years. In fact, it is largely due to the incredible efforts of a team of volunteers. These folks form the Organizing Committee for this wonderful event, and they work tirelessly to ensure everything comes together to create an amazing experience for the participants, sponsors and spectators. Their goal is to make each year a little better than the last.

Please join us in recognizing and thanking these community leaders of the 2020 event:

The first triathlon was on September 24, 1974 in San Diego, CA. In 2000, triathlon became an Official Olympic Sport for the first time as part of the Sydney Olympics. Since then, it has been recognized as one of the fastest growing sports in the world. And, kids triathlons have been an important part of this trend.

In 2009, Kids Triathlon (a 501(c)3 entity) helped organize its first triathlon for kids in Jacksonville, FL. Nearly 500 youth (ages 5 to 15) participated, making it the largest first-time kids triathlon ever held. The First Coast Kids Triathlon continued to grow over the next 3 years to more than 1,700 participants in 2011. At this point, the race became the largest kids triathlon in the USA.

This success attracted the attention of USATriathlon (the governing body of the sport in the US under the auspices of the US Olympic Committee); the NFL PLAY60 Initiative; and the YMCA. Together, these organizations pooled resources to expand the series into five more regions during 2011 and 2012. The Inaugural New England Kids Triathlon was started in 2012, and it has quickly become one of the Top 10 kids triathlons in the United States.

What these kids accomplish is nothing short of amazing. If you would like to learn more about how you can help tell their stories, please reach out to us. Media credentials are available for race weekend as well as for what kids are doing to prepare for the big race. Please utilize the information below to reach out to us, and we will do everything possible to help.

Awards & Results

The New England Kids Triathlon is all about giving kids the opportunity to accomplish something less than 1% of all kids will ever do. In this spirit, every finisher is recognized with a custom medal and free ice cream. All participants also receive a cool t-shirt along with a Race Goody Bag filled with neat stuff.

At the same time, we make a significant investment in timing each event just like it is a professional race. Every participant wears an RFID timing chip on their ankle during the race, and receives 6 separate times. At the end of the race, each athlete will know their swim; T1 (transition from swim to bike); bike; T2 (transition from bike to run); run; and total times.

With this timing information in hand, we recognize the fastest triathletes at every age level, boys and girls, with trophies. Specifically, the top 3 finishers at each age (6, 7, 8, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15) are recognized in a post-race ceremony. More importantly, every participant is able to compare all 6 of their times with other competitors, and they can set goals to improve over the next 12 months.

Race Photos

Our course is designed to be spectator friendly, and we encourage you to take as many photos as possible. In doing this, we have only two requests.

  1. Please stay off the race course, and
  2. Please be respectful of all athletes.

We want you to get great photos, but it is not fair if you end up in the way of another athlete. And, if you would prefer not to have to worry about viewing the entire event through a camera, we will have professional photographers on-site to capture all of the action. Please check back to this page as we get closer to race weekend for all related information and a link to their website.
